Harnessing wave energy for a thriving shoreline
In collaboration with HDSR and Iv-Infra, The Weather Makers developed an innovative nature-friendly shoreline along the Canalised Hollandsche IJssel. Designed using water- and soil-driven ecology, this approach harnesses the natural energy of passing boats to stimulate ecological processes—turning wave action into a driver of biodiversity.
Engineering nature with precision
The challenge was to balance hydraulic dynamics with ecological restoration. Using advanced modeling, The Weather Makers determined how ship-generated wave energy interacts with the shoreline. The design features strategically placed recesses in the wooden construction, fine-tuned to create just enough movement to enhance remineralization without destabilizing the ecosystem. The morphological design further optimizes slope shaping and bed levels to improve water quality and nutrient cycling.
Turning movement into life
This shoreline doesn’t just protect—it thrives. The controlled dynamics foster diverse algae growth, forming the foundation of the food chain for key fish species. Unlike conventional nature-friendly designs, this system actively enhances biodiversity by utilizing "free" energy from boat traffic, making it a more productive and sustainable solution.
Smart design meets natural resilience—proving that the right flow can bring ecosystems to life.
