The Eco Oasis where nature and innovation meet

The Eco Oasis Laboratory (EOL) is a groundbreaking research facility that merges natural and technological systems to tackle environmental challenges. Inspired by biologist John Todd, The Weather Makers built this fully operational prototype in 2022 near their home city of ’s-Hertogenbosch. Designed to study water purification, soil improvement, biodiversity, and food production, the Eco Oasis serves as a physical model laboratory—a living, adaptable system where nature itself becomes the experiment.

A self-sustaining cycle of life

The Eco Oasis consists of interconnected aquatic and terrestrial habitats, where water flows continuously, linking each part of the system. At its core are twelve transparent water tanks (each 2.4m³), arranged in two "trains" of six tanks. These tanks, exposed to natural light, support algae, bacteria, macrofauna, and fish, creating microcosms that exchange nutrients and life as water circulates.

After passing through the aquatic system, the water is directed into soil trays containing diverse Dutch ecosystems—forest, grassland, and wetland species. As water moves through the soil, it undergoes natural filtration and transformation, enhancing purification, nutrient cycling, and salinity control before returning to the next aquatic train.

Pioneering research in ecological engineering

Over the past two years, the Eco Oasis has facilitated studies on nutrient uptake, plant growth with purified water, soil desalinization, freshwater generation, and biodiversity dynamics. Equipped with custom-built sensors and real-time monitoring, it provides a controlled yet evolving environment to explore the intricate relationships between water, soil, and life.

By mimicking nature’s intelligence, the Eco Oasis is more than a research facility—it’s a blueprint for regenerative ecosystems.
