Eco Island: Nature-Driven Design for Poland’s waterways
The Weather Makers, in collaboration with United Designers, developed an alternative design for the Modernization of the Fairway Świnoujście – Szczecin project. Commissioned by the Consortium Dredging International (DEME) – Van Oord (VO), the plan reimagines two new islands in the Szczecin Lagoon—not just as landforms, but as vital ecological sanctuaries.
A sanctuary for biodiversity
Instead of a conventional reclamation approach, the island interiors were designed as bird habitats, using strategically placed dredged material to create safe nesting and feeding grounds. A gently sloping, nature-based shoreline enhances habitat diversity, supporting benthos, fish populations, and native vegetation—boosting biodiversity throughout the lagoon.
Innovation in coastal protection
To safeguard the islands against extreme storms, The Weather Makers introduced a submerged breakwater solution that offers protection without disrupting natural ecological processes. This innovative approach, combined with the use of natural materials, aligns with the Building with Nature philosophy—enhancing resilience while reducing environmental impact.
Smarter design, lower costs, greater impact
The alternative plan resulted in a 40% cost reduction compared to the reference design, primarily by minimizing the need for rock in protective structures. Beyond cost savings, the project delivers measurable environmental benefits: carbon sequestration (blue carbon), habitat creation for endangered species, improved water quality, and stronger aquatic biodiversity.
Sustainable islands aren’t just built—they’re carefully designed to thrive.
