Optimizing navigation in the Juliana Canal

As the Juliana Channel prepares for expansion, The Weather Makers were brought in by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Rijkswaterstaat South Netherlands to assess its operational system. With the canal being widened to accommodate larger inland vessels—up to 190 meters in length—concerns arose about increased traffic, structural integrity, and navigational safety.

Understanding the impact of expansion

Two key challenges were analyzed: the effect of lock operations at Sluis Born on water stability and the impact of increased traffic on canal infrastructure. Using historical data and future projections, The Weather Makers conducted an in-depth analysis of water levels, ship movements, and wave translation to assess potential risks.

Smart tools for smarter waterways

To support long-term decision-making, The Weather Makers developed a predictive tool to model water loss and fluctuations caused by lock usage. This system enables scenario testing for different lock operation strategies, ensuring stability and mitigating risks before they arise.

Future-ready water management

By combining data-driven insights with operational expertise, the study offers a clear path to safer, more efficient navigation in the Juliana Channel. As inland waterways evolve, intelligent planning ensures resilience—keeping commerce flowing without compromising stability.
