Nature-Based Engineering

Designed by nature. Engineered for impact.

At The Weather Makers, nature is not a constraint—it's our greatest collaborator. We design and implement Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) that integrate ecology, hydrology, and engineering to solve today’s most pressing environmental and societal challenges. Whether we’re restoring wetlands, stabilizing coastlines, or improving water resilience in drought-prone areas, our approach is rooted in the belief that the best solutions begin with nature.

Why Nature-Based Solutions?

Nature holds the blueprint for balance. By restoring ecosystems and working with natural processes, we enhance biodiversity, capture carbon, and increase resilience to climate change—while delivering economic and social value to communities. Our NbS projects demonstrate that we don’t have to choose between environmental protection and development. We can do both.

Our approach

Our methodology combines field data, cutting-edge modelling, and local knowledge to co-design solutions with measurable impact. From coastal mudflats in the UAE to rain-fed farmland in Morocco, we work closely with stakeholders to align ecological function with human needs.

For example, in Mozambique, we restored mangrove forests by mimicking natural water flows, using drones and topographical data to identify optimal planting zones. In Egypt, we designed wetlands that not only stabilized dredged materials but also improved water quality and created vital wildlife habitats.

In North Brabant, we built a model that allowed contractors to quantify and differentiate their ecological compensation strategies during a road construction tender. And in Spain, we are exploring how microbiome diversity can strengthen soil and reduce dependency on chemical inputs.

Each project, no matter how local, contributes to a global movement toward regenerative design.

Innovation that measures nature

Through collaboration with ZLTO, we developed a novel method to measure soil carbon through water behaviour, turning each rain event into a moment of insight. This real-time feedback empowers farmers to adjust practices for better outcomes.

Similarly, in the Netherlands, we modeled how subtle changes in water flow could boost ecological productivity by up to 60% in the Moerbergse Waard. It's science, strategy, and stewardship—brought together in one design.

Scaling impact, globally

In Libya and the Middle East, we support regional visions for water security and climate resilience, identifying ecological ‘trigger points’ that can kickstart large-scale transformation. Our proposals integrate reforestation, wetland restoration, and hydrogen production with local livelihoods and biodiversity goals.

In Oman, we created a site selection tool to prioritize mangrove restoration based on cost-benefit analysis, hydrology, and habitat potential. And in Poland, we designed eco-islands with natural materials that support bird sanctuaries, aquatic life, and shoreline stability—while cutting costs by 40%.

What you can expect

Working with The Weather Makers means unlocking the power of nature through tailored, practical, and innovative solutions. We combine a rigorous, science-based approach with a deep understanding of local and regional dynamics. Whether you're managing infrastructure, protecting coastlines, or future-proofing landscapes, our NbS approach ensures sustainable results that benefit both people and planet.

Let’s work together to make nature part of your solution.
