Water’s path to smarter soil

The Weather Makers are redefining how we measure soil health—by following water. In partnership with ZLTO, we’ve developed an innovative approach to assess soil organic content across entire fields, eliminating the need for costly, isolated measurements. Traditional methods rely on expensive, single-point sampling, providing only snapshots of soil conditions. Our solution offers a continuous, real-time understanding of soil carbon levels, empowering farmers to see the direct impact of their field management decisions.

Why water holds the answer

Soil rich in organic matter acts like a sponge. Just 1% more organic content in the top 30 cm of soil can retain an extra 160,000 liters of water per hectare. That means water moves differently depending on soil health—changing infiltration rates, retention capacity, and runoff patterns. By tracking these shifts through groundwater sensors and soil moisture meters, every rainfall becomes a data point.

A breakthrough in the making

This research project is still evolving, but it’s already proving itself as a game-changer. By using water as a natural indicator, The Weather Makers are pioneering a smarter, scalable way to measure and monitor nature—bringing science and sustainability together in real-time.

Because the future of farming starts beneath our feet.
